Imagine being sent somewhere where everyone else is supposed to be just like you but then realizing you're something totally different; because that's how it was for Sophie Mercer.

    Sophie Mercer is a dark witch sent to Hecate Hall in Savannah, Georgia or Hex Hall, as the students like to call it; a reformatory school for Prodigium children, witches, warlocks, fae children, shape shifters and vampires; who threaten the exposure of their kind to humans. On her first day the three meanest witches at school hate her, a ghost follows her around where ever she goes, a vampire as a roommate who everyone happens to hate at Hex Hall, and she's one of the most powerful witch living and can barely do a love spell, which is why she's at Hex Hall because she did a love spell on a fellow student on homecoming night  and it want terribly wrong. Throughout the book Sophie battles through not only knowing and trusting the people around her but who or what she really is.

    Hex Hall keeps you on your toes from the first page to the last.

    Hex Hall explains that you should always know yourself and the people around you because you never know when they'll change.

    Savannah, Georgia was a perfect setting for the book, the hot August weather had a huge impact on the main character, Sophie because she was always complaining about it; pg. 7 "Thanks to the humidity, my hair felt like it had tripled in size." And they needed large excluded land to hide the school from humans. If Hex Hall was somewhere such as, New York City it would've been much harder to hide the school from humans, though I'm sure Sophie would find something else to complain about.

    Sophie and Archer had their first encounter on the first day of school; Archer saved her from almost being attacked by a werewolf then insulted her on her powers. As the book goes on there's definitely a connection between the two characters, except Archer has a girlfriend, Elodie, who just so happens to hate Sophie. But that doesn't stand in the way of Archer and Sophie wanting to be together or being forced to be together since they have detention every night cleaning the cellar for an hour; which bolstered to Sophie find out that Archer works for the "Eye" a group set out to kill Prodigium children, and he really didn't like her he just wanted to kill her.

    Three major things that happened in Hex Hall that impacted not only Sophie but other characters around was Sophie doing a love spell on her fellow classmate and being sent to Hex Hall. This was the cause of heartbreak trust issues and lies throughout the book. 
    Sophie finding out that Archer was only getting close to her so he could kill her, taught her that you can't trust everyone. 
    Sophie being told that she's not a witch. but a very powerful demon that can at any point snap and hurt people around. This is the reason why she wants to get her powers removed forever so that'll never happen.

    Hex Hall was written in chronological order, and was being told through the eyes of Sophie. One event affected the next event that happened in the book. The author's syntax was very understandable; pg. 72 "I opened my eyes to stare at a bright blue tulle monstrosity with a skirt that would hit me at mid-thigh." This sentence is very descriptive; obviously Sophie hated the dress she was trying to make for the winter ball. pg. 28 “Now y’all are not originally from this area, am I correct?” This sentenced was written to seem as if the character has a Southern accent by using the word y'all. pg. 10 “Let’s see… brown hair, freckles, whole girl-next-door vibe going on…Allie? Lacie? Definitely something cutesy ending in ie.” I think this sentenced was written to seem as a mockery toward Sophie’s looks her name.

(VINE VOICE)    "This review is from: Hex Hall (Book 1) (Hardcover) Hex Hall has a good plot, and an interesting main character, but I found it difficult to finish the book. Maybe I was expecting more magic, or action, I'm not sure, but I do know that I skimmed the last 50 pages. I kept reading the book trying to emerge myself into the world of Hex Hall, but I just couldn't. Besides the main character, most of the other characters were thin and one dimensional (Although Jenna did seem more real than the others). I found the "romance" between Archer and Sophie unromantic; they didn't really click together like the they should have. For me I didn't see what Sophie saw in Archer (besides the hotness which she brought up frequently). This was just an average book to me, and I wouldn't recommend it to my friends. "

    I definitely disagree with this review I couldn't put the book down. Yea the romance between Archer and Sophie could've been better but i think the author wanted to leave the readers hoping that it wasn't over between the two characters which is why there was so little romance in the book. The book wasn't fully about Sophie and Archer but who she could trust and their romance taught that.

 Probably good for teens; adults, not so much
NOTE: As an adult reader of YA books, I realize I am not the target market for these books and a lot of my disappointment with this book probably stems from the fact that the tone is very teenage (not all YA books are like this). Reviewing it for adult readers, I would give it 2 stars. If I were a teen, though, I probably would have given it 4 stars...so I averaged them... 

I do agree that Hex Hall would only draw the attention of teenagers since it is relatable to most teenagers.

Sophie Mercer has been carted around to nineteen different schools throughout her very young life; we first meet her at one particular school on prom night. Sophie feels bad for a young woman crying her eyes out in the ladies' room; the young girl is dateless to the prom and wants this to be rectified... 

This review was the only one I found that like the book and i agree with the reviewer. I would like to see a movie mad for Hex Hall.

     I really enjoyed reading Hex Hall; I thought the book had a very good theme. Sophie battled a lot with knowing who she was because during majority of the book she thought she was a witch, but then found out she was a demon. Sophie and Archer;s romance was not only taught a lesson for the readers but it also gave the readers something to hope for by wanting the two characters to be together. I think the author, Rachel Hawkins wrote Hex Hall well and I liked how she left a cliff hanger at the end of the book to urge readers to read the next book.
 

    

Grace Morris adores her father. He’s about 6 feet tall with sandy blond hair and just enough muscles to make someone assuage  an argument or back down from a fight with him. He travels all around the world in his hot air balloon writing stories about his adventures and bringing back fruit to sell at the local market held at the end every other month.

                People come from all over Savannah just to get a glimpse of his eccentric fruit and hear his vivid enlightening interesting tails about his fruit and his journeys just to get them; pink plums with green spikes, oranges with out the citrus flavor and tomatoes that are sweet like an peach.

      “Hi Gracey”
    
     “Hey Dad”

    “Guess what I have today”

     Hesitating before she responds. “Ummmm a purple watermelon that's orange on the inside with yellow seeds”

    “No but it is a melon”

    Her father hands her a fruit that’s green like the leaves of an evergreen, smaller than her big toe and probably weighs an ounce.

  “Bite it its delicious”

    Hesitantly Grace Does as she’s told and takes a small bite and just as the fruit’s sweet flavor enters her mouth her eyes widen with amazement and excitement to put the rest in her mouth.

    “I knew you’d like it” says her dad with a satisfying smirk. “Gracey I’d like you to come with me tomorrow when I leave for another trip your mother already said it was okay and you’re out school. Would you like to come?”

    Trying to hide the ebullient reaction she wants give her father.” Of course I would love to come with you.

    “Great then its all set we’ll leave at the crack of dawn”

    Grace was too excited to go to sleep last night so she stayed up imagining the place thy were going and how different it would be. But because of her lack of sleep she fell aleep in the hot air ballon and was woken up with a CRACK and POP! The sky was black as tar and the waves under her were as fierce as her younger brother when he doesn’t get what he wants.

    “Dad what’s going on, I'm scared”

    “It’s a storm an it’s knocked us off course and I cant steer the balloon because the steer is jammed and the balloon has a whole in it that I can only repair on the ground landed”

    “But where over water there could a strip of land for miles”

    “I know but I’m pretty sure the basket can float on the water”

    “Pretty sure but we’re going to die out here alone”

    Suddenly the air balloon starts twirling and spiraling toward the water. 

    “AWWWWWW.” Yells Grace

    Just as they plop in the water a huge wave hovers over them and right then Grace knew it was over. All she could here was water whirling around her as she reached for her father hand they were thrown out the basket into the water just as they reach for air another wave came that was larger than the other that made everything go black.

    “Grace wake up. Get up Gracey come on we made it to an island wake up please.” Graces father pleads with fear in his voice.

    One eye opens slowly not used to the new light yet and then the other.

    “Land?”

    My favorite sport is swimming. There are to ways to swim recreational, which is what i like to do and in this case you'll only need to know how to float and tread water. Treading water is when you float upright, as if you're sitting in a chair that's under water. The second type of swimming is competitive. Competitive swimming is much more serious and requires a lot of work.
